South African mezzo-soprano Liang Yu has lived and performed in the US and Europe. She was most recently featured in the title role of Händel's Giulio Cesare in Belgrade, Serbia. Her other notable operatic roles include Rinaldo (Rinaldo), Ruggiero (Alcina), Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), the Old Lady (Candide), and Nicklausse (Les contes d'Hoffmann). As an oratorio soloist, Liang has performed the alto solos in Pergolesi's Stabat mater, Händel's Messiah, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb. Liang holds a B.S. in Astronomy & Physics from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she participated in the Emerson Scholarship Program for advanced musical studies. She currently resides near Munich, Germany.
