A composer and songwriter in diverse genres, Walter also translates music from other instruments to the guitar, resulting in mind-bending guitar renditions of the music of the West African kora that legendary kora player Toumani Diabate called “inspirational,” and reflect his passionate interest in the deep musical traditions of the world.
Acoustic Guitar Magazine says Walter has “managed to elevate the instrument and the genre on the whole.” The German counterpart, Akustik Gitarre Magazin, calls him a virtuoso and praises “the adventurous complexity of rhythms, harmonies and voice leadings, which Strauss performs with astonishing ease”. British acoustic guitar icon Martin Simpson describes Walter’s playing as “beautiful, fluid, and sophisticated”. American avant electric guitarist David Torn calls him “super-freakin musical”.
