At 84, Bill Ritchie is still a teaching artist, including YouTube as a platform for art, documenting, and teaching. His video journey began in 1970 with his first productions to put professional artists in the libraries of the University of Washington's School of Art in Seattle. The first video he produced features the artist and master printmaker Stephen Hazel. He quit the UW in 1985, but some of his 200 productions are here on Bill's channel. For fifty-six years, Bill used video for teaching and as an art form in its own right. By 2026, he had uploaded over 950 videos. Starting in 2008, YouTube has been his sandbox for experimenting with his career legacy. Bill sees this as a way to make artists’ legacies accessible, reflecting on their documented pasts and turning them into inspiration for future creators. Learning technical video skills, like editing, audio, and special effects, keeps Bill sharp, much like musicians compose, exercise their voice, and practice musical instruments.
