Chick Roberts 1932-2023 was a pioneer of the Toronto Yorkville Folk scene 1960’s. Musician, singer, actor. Co-founder of The Dirty Shames 1964-1968, and The Sinners 1959-1963. In 1960's Yorkville Folk music scene the Shames performed at college concerts, coffee houses, night clubs, TV shows in Canada and US. The first “modern commercial jug band”. Recorded demos for Kapp Records produced by Felix Pappalardi (best known for his work with Cream) who played bass on recordings. Regulars at The Riverboat, Penny Farthing, appeared on CTV’s After Four & Lets Sing Out. In New York 1966, they moved into a folk-rock electric sound after signed to Phillips label. Managed by Leonard Cohen's manager Mary Martin they lived at the Chelsea Hotel, recorded two singles, opened for The Velvet Underground at The Gymnasium. In his book Waging Heavy Peace Neil Young mentions Chick and the Shames. Chick was a solo act 1960-2019. Founder/singer of The Blues Collar Band they released “Blue Turning Grey” CD.
