One car ride when I was little I sang along to Barry Manilow + blurted out “I want to be a singer.” The only problem was I couldn’t speak let alone share my singing with the world. I have Selective Mutism, a severe anxiety disorder characterized by the inability to speak in certain situations. I could talk perfectly fine at home but was mute in social situations. In 2020 friends suggested I make a YouTube after I sang. The next day TheMeganGilbey was born. I can’t read music so I taught myself by ear. Now not only do I face a camera but 2023 I started singing live. From hiding behind music stands I teamed up with Burlington singer songwriter Andrew Irving + can now face an audience with confidence + grace. I have sang across Southern Ontario learning how to perform and overcome Selective Mutism. With determination, honesty love persistence + pure stubbornness anything is possible. I needed someone with Selective Mutism on stages who I could aspire to be so I am going to be that person.
