ECM recording artist Nicolas Masson was born in Geneva, Switzerland. At the age of 20, he travels to New York, meets legendary pianist Cecil Taylor on the night of his arrival, delves into the realm of libertarian improvisation by studying with Frank Lowe and Makanda McIntyre.
Currently living in Switzerland, he has enjoyed a varied career as a performer, composer and photographer. Highlights include tours, performances and/or recordings with artists such as Ben Monder, Gerald Cleaver, Thomas Morgan, Kenny Wheeler, Kris Davis, Eivind Opsvik, Russ Lossing, Colin Vallon, Patrice Moret, Lionel Friedli, Matthieu Michel, Tom Arthurs, Samuel Blaser, Bojan Z, Nduduzo Makhatini, and many others.
He is also active as a photographer, creating numerous portraits and personal projects. His photographs have been featured in eight albums covers and booklets from ECM Records.
