Belly Dance United produces innovative U.S.-style bellydance shows breaking away from what is considered "traditional" bellydance by incorporating comedy, acting, modern dance and other ancient dance traditions. Although innovation is key to the success of Belly Dance United, we always maintain a deep respect for the roots of bellydance or raks sharki and its ancient lineage. With that in mind, each performer is expected to have a complex understanding of the technique and historical background from its many countries of origin.
The audience generally gains a greater understanding of why bellydance is beneficial on many levels and where this ancient dance originates from. As one of the oldest dances, dating back 5000 years ago, bellydance has its roots in ancient temple dancing, birthing rituals and folkloric dances celebrating the birth of a baby, a wedding, and other community festivities.
