Honest songs from an American life.
My name is Charleston Red. My father was born in Charleston, West Virginia with red hair. My mother came from Logan, where her father — a coal miner, hobo, and boxer known as Kid Burns — carried four centuries of mountain life on his back.
They brought those mountains to Detroit, where I was born. I grew up on Motown and rock and roll, but the Appalachian roots were always underneath, waiting.
I drive trucks for a living and do most of my writing parked somewhere quiet with a composition book on the steering wheel. The road gives you a lot of time to think about faith, loss, love, and the people who shaped you.
These songs are what comes out of that thinking.
Welcome to Charleston Red. I'm glad you found your way here.
