"Calling it cabaret” is to define what goes into a special underground entertainment genre. The nature and essence of cabaret can be humorous, human, musical, mystical, dazzling, dangerous, delightful, distressing, up-to-date and non-mainstream. Only in genuine cabaret does a bond develop during the show between the performers in their work of art as a whole, the show, and the audience. The bond is more or less conscious in nature, but so soulfully pervasive that it creates something felt by everyone as unusually engaging. Circumstances are usually rustic and challenging, rarely comfortable. Cabaret directors aim only to create what needs to be transferred from a stage to an audience emotionally. In Swenglistic Underground (ex-CabarEng), an American cabaret director and young Swedish performers have worked to maintain an often suppressed tradition which dates back to the use of catharsis as medication for human souls.
