Dr. Fromm’s Music Lab is a music theory channel for students and teachers who want more than memorized rules. This channel focuses on understanding why the rules exist, by starting with voice leading, counterpoint, and real musical behavior, and showing how chord progressions and harmonic “rules” emerge from the way composers actually move voices. Much of the content is designed for AP Music Theory students and teachers, with deep dives into part writing, harmonic function, cadences, and common problem spots on the exam. But the approach is intentionally not dumbed down. These videos engage directly with real repertoire: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and beyond, and often go well past what textbooks explain. My Chord by Chord Series explores harmony one connection at a time, not as a list of prohibitions, but as a system shaped by preferred motions, constraints, and compositional choices. Instead of asking “what’s allowed,” we ask why composers chose one solution over another.
