The theme of R J Martinez Channel is " The History of the Mexican Civil Rights Movement in San Jose, California 1940’s to the present.
The term Mexican is used because in the 1940's, if one was asked "What are you?", the response would likely be "I'm a Mexican". The US civil rights era of the 1960's through 1980's was focused on the group defining itself on it's own terms. As time passed, the response to the question of group identity changed to Mexican American, then Chicano, then Latino and/or Hispanic. As part of La Raza Historical Society.of Santa Clara Valley, this channel recognizes the need to promote the history of “ La Raza”, made up of the many nationalities and cultural groups that have always resided in our region and contributed to the advancement of all La Raza in our region.
