I love to play classical music on my viol;in, and wondered if it is possible to compose classical music without any lessons in harmony, counterpoint or form. I started trying this out over 50 years ago using only my ear and appreciation of music as my guide, and have continued to do so ever since. Harmony students fear using the rules because their music may sound like a 'pastiche' of someone like Beethoven. I cannot use the rules because I don't know what the rules are. For this reason I do not feel disadvantaged, and feel free to compose without worrying about using someone else's rules. My music is also free for anyone to listen to, play or perform. I would love a professional instrumentalist to perform one of my works, but I fear this is unlikely because I do not have the right pedigree.
